Bio-Capital
The brief
Once food goes into a waste bin, its value is easy to overlook. Bio Capital’s work gives it another use. Our task was to make that potential visible, connecting the food waste people recognise with the energy, fuel and biofertiliser it can become.
“This isn’t waste. It’s a resource.” gives the story a clear focus. The film takes viewers through the process so that, by the end, they understand what that statement means.
The build
Connecting the process to everyday life
Working with Macbeth Lankester, we developed the script and treatment around the relationship between what goes in and what comes out. Anaerobic digestion is part of that explanation, alongside the practical uses of the resources it produces.
Homes, vehicles and agricultural scenes make those uses tangible. The connection to Bio Capital’s own collection fleet brings the circular idea into particular focus: fuel made from food waste can help power the vehicles that collect it.
Each part of the story builds towards a different way of seeing the material we discard, and the role Bio Capital plays in putting it to use.
Giving the message a visual form
Bio Capital’s existing illustrations gave us a starting point. We developed them into connected scenes, using movement to follow food waste through the process and out towards its useful applications.
The script needed to carry the important information while giving that central idea room to land. We worked through the wording with Macbeth Lankester, combining related points and linking the explanation back to what those outputs mean in everyday life.
The animation followed the same thinking. Close-up details explain what is happening; wider scenes show where it leads. Transitions connect those views so the audience can follow the transformation.
A clear story to take into conversations
We produced an opening section at close to finished quality early in the project, allowing the agency and client to judge the voice, pace and visual approach together before the full animation was completed.
Developed for website, social and client-facing presentation use, the film gives Bio Capital a way to explain its work around one memorable message: food waste has value beyond the bin.
The outcome
Energy for homes. Fuel for vehicles. Nutrients returned to agriculture. Following those connections gives food waste a different meaning.
Our work with Macbeth Lankester helped put that message at the centre of Bio Capital’s story, using animation to show the value in what we throw away.
This isn’t waste. It’s a resource.
